Family Dentistry gets Walnut Creek Kids off to a healthy start
Family Dentistry, also known as General Dentistry, refers to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting your teeth and gums.
Providing quality dental care to your whole family is the core mission of our office.
Many dental problems can be traced back to a bad experience at the dentist as a child. Rough or forced treatment leaves a young patient fearful of returning to the chair, and possibly rebellious about home hygiene. Our Doctors want to be the first dentists your child sees through adulthood, to avoid any oral problems.
Why is Family Dentistry Important?
Routine checkups and cleanings will greatly reduce the risk of periodontal disease. There is a direct link between healthy gums and a healthy heart. And if you are pregnant, it is even more important to have regular teeth cleanings. Without having regular teeth cleanings, you may develop periodontal disease. This is a destruction of your gums and bone. When your body loses bone, there is no way to re-grow it. Remember, your mouth is the gateway to your body.
The sooner your child starts seeing a dentist, the less anxious they will be as they get older. Your child’s dental care should begin before the first tooth erupts. An appointment by his or her first birthday introduces baby to the sights, sounds, and smiling faces at Procopio Dental Office. This unhurried, pleasant visit sets a baseline for future care, and provides education for parents on how to keep baby’s gums and emerging teeth clean. We provide courtesy dental exams to children below two years of age, to get them introduced to a dental office and they realize that visiting a dentist can be fun. We let them watch cartoons and pick out a prize from the treasure chest when they are done!
Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in America, especially among NON-smokers. The earlier a malignancy is diagnosed, the more successful the treatment.
Gone are the days when tooth decay was fixed with black and silver fillings. We now have the technology to restore teeth with tooth colored porcelain or resin. In addition to looking natural, they are very bio-compatible with our bodies since they do not contain any mercury or metals.
A white filling is also called an invisible, composite resin, or tooth-colored filling. It is made of a glass and tooth colored plastic mixture, and is used to restore decayed or chipped teeth. Composite is also used to improve discolored teeth, reshape disfigured teeth, close spaces between teeth, and lengthen short teeth.
The composite is superior to amalgam (silver) fillings because the resin bonds to the tooth structure, providing strength and support. Silver fillings simply wedge into a prepared tooth, and can actually cause fractures, weakening the tooth further, as the metal expands and contracts.
Composites are a terrific option for aesthetic purposes because the doctor can blend the resin to be a near perfect match to the shade of the actual tooth. When used as a dental filling or cosmetic flaw correction, they are virtually invisible in the smile, unlike the dark, unattractive amalgam fillings.
Benefits of Family Dental Care
Advantages of family dental care include:
- Convenience – We are happy to schedule appointments for multiple family members on the same day, to reduce travel and missed time from work or school.
- Vigilance – When we treat your entire family, we develop a deep understanding of lifestyle and hereditary conditions that may impact oral health. This helps us intercept problems early, when they are most reversible, and treatment is efficient and economical. We also keep a watchful eye on oral development of children for possible need of orthodontic intervention.
- Safety – By building trusting relationships with families, we know your medical background – what health issues you may be managing and what medications you take. Should you have a dental emergency, you can count on prompt care with this higher level of assurance.
